strange new tranny noise

Strange new transmission noise , at least it feels like it is coming from the tranny. It only shows up when moving slowly, less than 20m/h on a slight slope downhill when the tranny is trying to slightly slowdown the car or at least not letting it accelerate much. I only hear it when I barely press on the gas. If I give it more gas it goes away, if the slope is too steep and the engine breaks herder, it goes away. (btw, I feel the GL is always trying to engine break downhill no matter what, which I guess is normal for newer generation cars) . So the noise is very muffled frequent and sounding like a clank/clank/clank, similar to when you have a ball joint that needs replacement but much-much more muffled. And, my ball joints are OK!, if the engine is in neutral when revving it I hear nothing, so I think it is from the tranny. Any ideas/thoughts??

Thanks

yep, I know it is hard to narrow down such issues based on sound and description via web forums. I am pretty sure I have to take it to a mechanic at the end, but I thought I give it a shot here in case someone had similar thing going on. I was paying closer attention today, the sound actually shows more often when not touching the gas , very muffled low pitch knock-knock-knock can be heard but it may not even be the tranny..

Just an update, I had it scheduled for inspection at the dealer but he noise went away, so I canceled as I don't want them to chase a ghost and charge me. Waiting for the noise to re-appear but in the meantime I discovered that the nose is not muffled at all. When I roll down the window I can hear distinct metal clicking. It sounds almost identical to when you shift from P-D-R, if you roll down the windows you will hear the gears engage. At least mine I can hear, and I always thought it was kind of too loud to be normal, but never had issues with the tyranny so I let it be, but this could have been a warning for things to come. Do you hear loud clicking when shifting from P-D or P-R??, you will hear it better when windows are down, and even better if you are in an underground parking garage where sound bounces. Let me know .thx

OK, I think I found the issue, and I am pretty sure it is the front driveshaft. Went under the car grabbed the shaft with my hand, car was in gear, and started twisting it back and forth. It is making the clanking sound similar to what I hear when driving. I did the same on the rear drive shaft and no noise is coming out. I don’t think this noise is normal -can anyone verify?? Also, has anyone replaced it, it does not look too complicated for a DIY job.

p.s. I may start a new thread as it will be confusing later when people search, I mislead everyone that it is a tyranny issue.
