I wedged off the side silver plastic piece in my door panel where the arm rest is in my 2010 GL550 and noticed a lot of the LEDs were out.

Has anyone attempted to change the ambient lighting? Maybe to a blue, red, white color? Obviously I would like something that looks factory with no wires hanging etc.

if anyone has, I'd love to see pictures.

Try stained glass paint spray on the bulbs or lenses. Might work well...
