ESP Inoperative - Steering Angle

A while back I had an ESP error. Cleared it with the lock-to-lock thing.

A more persistent error about two weeks later. This time it wouldn't clear. I tried cleaning the Steering Angle Sensor, but no luck. I still have the error. Details: 5170* Steering wheel angle Zero point variation. The sensor reads -16 degrees when wheel is pointed straight ahead.

The info I've seen on SAS failure indicates that it yields massive errors, i.e. 720 degrees. I ordered a replacement SAS, but if anyone has any ideas about other stuff to try, let me know.

*MBII reports as 5170, though I've seen lots of people refer to it as C1170.

I cleaned the SAS carefully, reassembled, and redid the calibration. No issues since.
