Rear liftgate/tailgate/hatch sagging

My power opening tailgate lifts all the way up, then sags down a few inches.

Is this more likely the lift system or the struts?

GL320
i have a 2007 GL320 and just had to reset my lift gate height limiter not 30min ago since i replaced the control module. On a 2007 you have to make sure that "height limiter" is set to off on the instrument cluster. Then with the lift gate closed (my engine was on but not sure that mattered) set the lift gate height by pulling the lift gate button on the door. Each time i triggered it, it lifted a little more until it get where i wanted it. then i pushed the button to close all the way.

Not sure it will work for you, but it's worth a try.

Kind of doubt that is the problem, since it opens all the way and then, besides back down after the motor stops.

It sure sounds like symptoms of weakening struts. I mean, the motor just opens it, right? The struts take some of the burden off the motor and then keep the hatch up, right?

"Usually" you start to notice this more in cold weather.

I just wish someone would post that the same thing happened to them and what they did to fix it.

If it was the motor, wouldn't it have a hard time (maybe not at all) just getting the hatch to completely open?

Guessing it could be low fluid, buy I would think that i would see slow opening at the end of the run, or springy movement due to air in the fluid.

Agree - if it was low fluid, it wouldn't open all the way. The door is the heaviest when it is fully open - meaning that's where there is the most "weight" on the struts and where they would start to give out, first.

Speaking of rear hatches... does yours close with a hard/loud "slam"? I've always thought mine closes too hard, but maybe it's normal?

No hard slam. Just a solid landing followed by the latch mechanism pulling it tight.

I might be exaggerating on the "hard" part. Plus, I realize "hard" is a subjective term. I'll try and get a video of it.

Ordered a set of struts.

Will report back after they are installed, so at least the next person does not need to go through this.
