Keyless GO key fobs?

Keyless GO key fobs?
When we got a used 2008 GL320 CDi it came with just one keyfob. I started calling dealers and I am getting quotes from $350 + $150 for programming to over $800!
I know that programming requires a handshake from server in Germany before it can be programmed, but I also read on forums that with VIN info fob can be programmed and key cut without a car. Is that true? Is there a way to get a Keyless Go fob for less than $500? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

That's all a lie. The fobs come programmed with the cut key. Just go to the dealership, provide proof of ownership (registration or title) and give them your VIN. that's all they need. But they come programmed to your vehicle.

On non-keyless go vehicles, yes, pick up the key and go. On the keyless-go vehicles, the dealership always had to keep the vehicle to make sure it worked properly. Could be BS but my dealership did the same thing on mine.

We recently had a key start acting up as well. The keyless go functions aren't working properly - when you touch the door handles to unlock, the car makes a clicking sound but the doors don't unlock. It also won't start with keyless go, but the doors will unlock if you press the unlock button and will start if you pop the start button out and use it as a key. We were going to just live with having one key without keyless go functions, but today the car starting reacting like you've pressed the panic button after the doors are locked and the bad key is nearby. Not sure if the key is fixable/reprogrammable or needs to be replaced.
We had one go completely dead several years ago and a replacement was $300ish. Now it is ~$600. Ouch.
