Angry One Key works, one doesn't...

Hello friends, on my '08 GL450, one of my keys works to start my vehicle and the other doesn't. The key that doesn't work still unlocks vehicle, controls lift-gate, etc, just no starting. From what I understand of this system it sounds to me like something may be wrong with the 'handshake' between my key and the EIS. Does this sound right? That it would affect one key and not the other? I have tried replacing batteries to no avail in case it was just a low voltage thing on the side of my key. Since one key works, it seems reasonable to think that my EIS is ok. The comical annoyance of this all is that the FOB that starts the car for some silly reason requires me to be within 3' of the driver door and the FOB that won't start the car will work at any distance from the car that should be considered normal range. 😂So I have to carry both FOBs all the time unless I want to always be at the driver door before unlocking/locking/opening the lift-gate. Talk about annoying...

Probably need a new key. Prepare for sticker shock. I had one go bad 3 years ago, and a replacement was $300. That key went through the wash about a month ago and appeared to be dead. Replacement cost at my local dealer is now $600ish with programming. Fortunately the washed key came back to life so I didn't have to buy one.
