I had the dealer do the transmission service on a GL450 with 90K miles. Later when I checked the invoice I saw they used 001-989-85-03-09 transmission fluid. From checking the VIN and manufacture date I have the A89 code that calls for either 001 989 78 03 (blue) or 001 989 92 03 (gold) fluid. The fluid they put in is for the dual clutch transmissions.
I'm waiting to here back from the service consultant. I hope nothing will be damaged.
Attached is a star bulletin that shows the fluid types to be used. If anybody has something more recent that shows 001-989-85-03-09 fluid will work in a 722.9 let me know.
Thank you

If done at dealer. Get mb customer care involved for verification and then if it's indeed the wrong fluid get them involved for a good and proper bollickimg.

I posted my receipt here last year. Please check if it compares to what was used in yours.

The fluid in my 2012 GL450 is definitely NOT red and NOT blue and I would say, after inspecting it by letting a few drops out of the drain plug, it never has been one of these two colors. It looks like it may have been gold in color and I see, from the MB service bulletin, that is one of the possibilities and NEVER mix different types of fluids when servicing the tranny.Originally Posted by kombifan

Which fluid should I use? If I buy the fluid/filter change kit from FCP euro (I think that's the name) what will I get? It's not MB fluid, I don't think.
Tranny: 722.904

So the pentosin on fcp euro says it's the blue one. And the Liqui molly just says it's the updated oil for 2010+ models.Originally Posted by 1xsculler

I'd call fcp euro. They're pretty helpful. I know when j put in a 2010 gl it does say a89 model vs not. But you'r year doesn't.
2010 is the year they made the switch to Blue a89 option which isethe low friction fluid. So yours being from 2012 should be blue
That being said the only incompatible fluid is red and blue.
Gold and blue are a okay. 235.15/6 are compatible with eachother.
I have hhe red fluid and mine is an early 2010 with j think now the updated pan.
