GL 320 p0299

2008 GL320 with around 130k

started getting the p0299 code intermittently. It isn’t losing power or acceleration. It hasn’t gone into limp mode. The turbo does seem to have a higher whistle sound. I have searched this forum with little luck trying to find similar symptoms. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

it’s going into the shop later this week for some Airmatic issues and I plan to have them check it out if I don’t find a solution sooner.

Update:

taking a look at the turbo today and noticed what looks like a crack on the air flow duct where it connects to the front of the turbo. Looks like there has been some type of solution put on it to try and repair it.

would this have an effect on the turbo causing underboost condition?

No. Underboost occurs between the compressor wheel of the turbo and the intake ports, not between the airbox and compressor wheel. Check the pipes and orings for cracks between the silver part of the turbo through the intercooler to the intake manifolds.

Another update, and now I’m really stumped.

after doing some research I read a lot about p0299 being a turbo actuator or boost pressure sensor going bad. Since both of these were relatively inexpensive parts I took a shot and replaced them myself.

after replacing both and clearing the code, it seemed like the power and acceleration returned to the car. However the loud turbo whistle continued. This time with a bit more of a woosh sound. It also developed a lurch at around 1k to 2k rpms and usually only on take off or under load. If I got in the throttle some during they lurching it would stop and so would the loud whistle and woosh sound.

I drove it around doing some errands today and this activity continued until all of the sudden while going up a hill after a stop it made one last lurch and then acted liked it was back in limp mode with no power or acceleration again. No codes just this time though.

I had one more stop and the was heading home. After coming out of the store and starting it as I pulled away it died. Just shut off. I was able to start it right back up and it died again seconds later. I waited a few minutes and tried starting it again. It started up and let me get in back in a parking spot but now it was idleing rough and shuttering while at idle. Continued to act like it was about to die. Still though all this zero codes have come.

any thoughts? It acted almost like it wasn’t getting fuel. I’m new to diesels so I’m stumped.

No experience with diesel GLs, but lots of turbo car experience. Wooshing sound and poor driveability usually mean a leak/loose connection somewhere between the turbo outlet and the engine. Check all the hose connections and look for tears/holes. Inability to keep the engine running probably means a hose has popped off completely. Good luck.

thanks for the reply! It’s going to the shop today because I’m at a loss. Could this be a fuel related issue? Like could the fuel filter be a problem?
