Unique retrofit.....

As most know I'm a huge fan of retrofit, anything. Im currently in the process of getting rid of the 2 rear bench seats and making my own version of a Maybach x164. Time consuming, but I do all my own wrenching etc.

Anyway, I came across this center stack screen and I've never seen one before and do like it. I reside in St. Louis, MO. However any eastcoast members interested, I've given photo credits to the installer. What are everyone's thoughts?

Installer is a member here @antiguangenius.

A little Tesla looking, but very unique.

Thoughts? Comments?

Well... it certainly LOOKS retro.

My 2 cents.

Not bad - maintains all switchology so I like that.

Now, what are you doing again - taking out all seats?

Max- I have no family and have zero need for 3 rows however I love the X164 exterior, which will remain the same. I've removed the 2nd and 3rd rows.. I'm in the process of trying to retrofit something similar to the new GLS Maybach. Making my GL550 a 4 seater. Seat belts and a subfloor along with choosing the correct seats and center console are time consuming. My friend has a fabrication shop for unique builds as such.

I have black interior and I've seen several x164 modified to a 4 seater online but they all looked cheap. It may take some time, but it will be done.

It should be noted- i by NO means plan on putting any sort of Maybach emblems or badges on my GL550.

Duly noted. Just curious on what your vision for interior layout and use of this vehicle will be. I like the idea of a 4-seater.
Pictures of progress or a build thread would be great!

You bet Max. Subfloor is a PITA! If you have suggestions for captain seats that are comfy or anything you think would be cool to add, please let me know.

I'm waiting for @eric_in_sd to chime in and tell me to leave it alone lol

The R-class has capn seats. That’ll keep the MB “look” but the pedestals will require significant fabrication to fit the floor profile.

Screen is interesting and has been posted here before. I would be willing to look at doing one of these conversions if they could integrate XM/Sirius directly to the head unit and not through an app.

Max- totally forgot about the R-Class seats. I need to do measurements because I want a rear center console which I'll fabricate myself with wireless phone charging, cup holders, possible cooler box, ambient lighting and other things.

The fabricator of that specific headunit is a member on the forums.

@antiguangenius can you advise if local AND satellite radio are functional in your setup?

What was the fabrication work? The unit as it appears has been around for some time.

There is no possible cooler...that’s a must cooler!

i think the world is waiting in bated anticipation on how you will incorporate a bubbly cooler and gat storage in the x164.

eric in sd has a good solution for the latter.

Ha! Just caught up with this thread. Been moving. I ought to change my handle as am now no longer in San Diego.

I like the whole whole idea. Modern vehicles intimidate you with layer upon layer of Important Stuff, and when you rip that out, the end result is something cleaner, pure ... yours. Not many things feel better than ripping out an unused component - the only thing better is to sell said component for a few bucks.

Anything is better than that insulting COMAND screen. During my road trip, I used mine as a suction cup mount location for my Garmin.

I bought a 12 volt compressor refrigerator specifically to use as a meat freezer during the road trip. Very worthwhile; it's now sitting on my balcony, on the 120 adapter, keeping my stock of meat frozen until I get around to unpacking it. The only caveat is finding a switched power supply; I've found the GL battery surprisingly easy to drain with standby discharge.

Did I post on the end result of the gat storage? It worked beautifully. A little trim to the glove box top, and the CD changer module slides out with slight resistance as it crosses the remaining lip. I had some bug-out cash I wanted to bank before the move, so I stashed it in the storage. Feels so good to get useless stuff out and replace with something cool.

I'm hoping the MOABR (Mother Of All Basket Racks) takes some of the sting out of my Cali license plates, driving around Idaho.

Cant!!! have to use the app, app is really not bad, just need internet, I mean you can use a hardware XM radio connected to the AUX input but thats too much... app is fine though, I have also figured a way to make it voice command, Ill show some stuff later when I get some time .

locan Radio YES via HARDWARE, XM Software only until someone makes an android controlled hardware, software only or use aux input with portable xm hardware but like I said earlier the software is NOT bad at all just need internet and since the radio is android it going to connected to the internet anyway so its pretty much the same, hardware xm suffers many factors especially on older hardware like these cars, software it top notch ill post some photos later

Now, is XM Sirius still satellite dependent?

I had this service on a trial basis in the wifes new car, and it’s unusable here in western WA due to trees. You pass a tree, you lose the signal. We have a lot of trees.

And don’t get me started on their follow up calls to renew the service agreement, where they assumed I really enjoyed this service and would be willing to fork over 2020 dollars for 1990s technology...I'm sure those “for quality purpose” recordings are being used as new salesman fodder training right now. Looks like I started myself.

If I were basing my multimedia stack xm sirius would not be a part of it.

XM/Sirius works great for me. If it is losing signal, the issue is typically an antenna issue. In particular, an aftermarket one, improper mounting location, or a subpar one from the factory. Sure, I will lose signal under a concrete bridge or behind other solid concrete/rock objects but trees or shrubbery has never been an issue on my MB's with factory sat radio. Yes, it's a deal killer for me. I understand that others may not feel the same way but sat radio is important to me and to be able to do so without using data.

i don’t understand what you mean by independent, once the comand is removed only the amplifier is useable, everything else on the fiber optics system is gone removed or not...

here are the photos

By satellite dependent I mean you have to have line of sight to an orbital asset at all times. Otherwise you get static. Which; in 2020 is like, what the actual f$@k. We invented buffering a couple of decades ago.

this happens on my stock command unit whenever XM has a free trial weekend so it isn’t an antenna or aftermarket issue. Also in my wife’s new Yukon.

but - back to OP; that setup looks good, much better than other alibaba offerings I’ve seen on here.

Hopefully you’ll have android or airplay to back XM up.

the XM is software that’s uses internet not an antenna, ain’t no buffering or drop out, it’s pretty much like listening to Pandora, YouTube, Spotify etc

the OP actually posted my system he got from my Instagram it is and android system it also have apple CarPlay and Bluetooth

One thing I noticed that's missing from the important command buttons. I see that heated seat function button what about the vented seat button? My 2011 GL550 needs to have those buttons!

I am also intrigued by the four seat refit. Will be extremely difficult to put any type of super comfy tall seats (like those in our conversion van) without compromising the floor pan stability. The floor pan around this area keeps anything from getting close to the gas tank access. The thought of using the R class second row seats I think would be a great idea. Or maybe some Rolls-Royce front buckets or maybe maybach rear recliners!
