Red face GL Indicator Issues when switched on

Hi Everyone,

I have a strange issue. When the vehicle is switched on my front left indicator gives 3 flashes then switches off and the fog lights becomes the indicator. After the first flash, the error message appears on the dashboard indicating a front left indicator problem. Every time I then turn on the indicator I get the same three flashes and then the switch over to the fog light.

I have tried a few things. swopped the left and right indicators. Switched the bulb with the back unit and still no change.

Today I tried something different. I had my Hazards on with the vehicle switched off and all the lights were flashing perfectly at the same time. The moment I switched on the ignition, the front left indicator made the 3 flashes and then the fog light took over.

I suppose it's an electrical problem

The three flashes are the system testing the bulb to see if it's burned out.

Pull out both bulbs but leave them in the sockets. Turn on the hazard lights to see if the bulbs illuminate smiilarly. A first guess would be that the left socket is corroded and there is insufficient current going through the bulb.

Thanks for the reply Eric. I did the test and all hazard lights turned on at the same time. No difference. I also swopped the left socket and bulb with the right socket and bulb.

Interesting is that you mention that the 3 flashes is the system testing the bulb. I thought is was working and then stopped, but your explanation gives me more options. I don't think it is the bulb with the issue, but maybe there is wiring that is not making good connection. I will take a look and get back with news.
Thanks

It can be very difficult to visually detect low current through a bulb. For example, a bulb that is half wattage only looks slightly less bright than full. You have to put the bulbs side by side, or as close as possible.

With appropriate leads, and a multimeter, you should be able to check the current flow through the left bulb and compare it to the right.

Since you swapped bulbs and found the problem persists, it is probably in the socket or wiring leading to.

I know the three flashes is testing, because when I have tried to use LED bulbs, which do not draw enough current, when I turn the ignition on, the system flashes the LED bulb three times and then gives up.
