Need help figuring this one out
I have a 2009 GL450 with about 102,000 miles on it. I recently started feeling a vibration under the driver seat when accelerating from a full stop or very low speed. The vibration goes a way once it reaches 35 miles/hr. When cruising it drives like new. This only happens when the engine is hot though. Not when first driving it. When I star driving it it is just fine until it gets hot again.
I also can hear a winning sound that's similar to the sound produced when a differential is going bad. However, it is not as loud.
Has any one experienced this? If you have can you shed some light as to what the issue may be?
Thank you!
chassis ears are your friend in locating weird noises.
Noises that begin when you accelerate sharply from a stop could be from a worn engine mount or stabilizer mount. If you find one mount is work/broken, just replace all of them.
Noises that are only I place at certain RPM are harmonic resonance and usually related to a stabilizing mount on the exhaust or engine, but can also be due to a worn engine mount.
Not many NVH related vibrations/noises change according to the vehicle being "warmed up". They either occur at 1900-2300RPM all the time or they don't occur. The caveat to this is the broken/worn engine mounts. When you park the car over night, it settles on the (broken/worn) mounts and it takes a few starts, stops, bumps to unsettle the engine in the cradle before the NVH becomes noticeable.
It was serviced this week and I asked them to road test it and listen and see if they thought it was a diff issue or whether the diff oils needed changing. THey did not think it was hte diffs and suggested maybe the tyres ?
I am not overly concerned but it will be interesting to see if it is there when I put my winter wheels and tyres on in a few months maybe.
