Now just one GL450 with EORP.
Interesting OM642 dissection

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_j9vMzgnyfc

my main takeaways:

1. Change your oil
2. 642 seems to be a very stoutly built engine
3. The egr system causes intake flaps to fail

yours may vary but it’s worth a watch.

Puddin! From what I read, the spun bearing is fairly common due to the manufacturer recommend oil change intervals of 10k miles. Hard to believe that synthetic oil would sludge that badly. Yes, change the oil 2x as often as what is recommended by the factory.

That engine had a serious water leak problem. I guess the head gaskets.

How do you know it had a water leak? I would assume the oil would be brown and frothy then. That looks like egr failure and carbon from diesel to me. That's just black as the night.

I think I heard the guy say that it was removed from a 2013 model in 2015…and that there was no evidence of oil change.

It's synthetic oil. You never have to change it.

Just replace the engine on a regular basis.

Sludge can be caused by no oil changes, overheating, mixing synthetic and conventional, excessive idling and lots of short trips, which prevent the oil from fully cycling, environmental contaminants in the oil (like dirt and debris), condensation, which can contaminate the oil with moisture, hot spots, which bake clumps and oil right onto the engine.

I knew about a owner that brought his GL450 for warranty because the car was overheating and the dealer found that he never changed the oil for more than 65K. According to the owner, nobody told him that the car needed oil change!

That's the way of the world, it seems. "Nobody told me"... "I didn't know"... "It's not my fault". I could start a page long rant on this and WHEN are we going to stop allowing this type of behavior and hold people responsible for their behaviors... but I won't... I'll limit it to just a sentence or two
