Oil dip stick question GL320

My GL320 gave me the check engine oil at next refueling and I started adding oil and checking dipstick but it seemed like it took more than I expected probably around 3-4 quarts. I then drove it about 60 miles and checked it while it was still hot and it seemed high. I then realized I had added oil in my driveway which has an incline so I started getting nervous I overfilled it.

I checked it again cold this morning and one side of it shows in normal range and the other seems to show above max. I did this several times and it was pretty consistent. My gut tells me it is probably fine because maybe the above max is just some oil I’m getting on it during inserting and removing it, but what do you all suggest should I extract some oil or does it look ok?

I'd leave it. It's safe to assume it's at the lower of the two points. If you want to get a reading that feels better, pull it out after letting it sit maybe overnight. Then all the oil will have had a chance to settle and you won't get false readings.

Get it good and warm, park on level ground, turn engine off and pull out dipstick. Come back 10 minutes later and check level.
