All the Deutschephiles are wrong. It isn't Gelandewagen Luxus. Thanks to StenoPete1911, a name which presumably refers to his pistol preference, over at Benzworld, I learned it stands for Good Luck.

So there's a Gelandewagen Lang Kurz?
If S stands for Scheiss I will die a happy man.
I am told that among the lowlanders, BMW stands for Bavarian Mist Wagen.

Our 1911-packing friend advocates putting gear oil in the transfer case. It makes a certain amount of sense, except I bet the gear oil actually gets hot from constantly being stirred by the bulky chain - and I thought the idea of making it transmission fluid was in case (when) the seals between the transfer case and transmission leak. Mixing ATF with the gear oil is no big deal, but gear oil into the transmission - that's a no no.
He ought to be careful about asserting the quality of the Ebay transfer case parts. The quality depends on the schedule on which the stamping dies are changed. My Chamberlain garage door opener shipped with metal brackets that have heavily rounded top edges and an actual protruding sharp bottom edge from the stamping. You can't just pick up the chain and heft it to determine it is legitimate.
