2007 GL450 x164 - Xenon Lights - Wiring Gone - Need Solution

2007 GL450 x164 Xenon Low Beam lights do not function anymore because wiring is completely disintegrated (plastic jacket is brittle and copper wiring is exposed).
Local Mercedes repair shop states they have to replace the ballast and wiring at ~$1,000 per side.

Other issues before headlights going out:
1. Was not able to turn off headlights with switch when moving to off position. Only could turn off lights by shutting car off.
2. Driver side headlight would go off after turning steering wheel 10 degrees and turn back on when wheel was straightened.

Car is worth about $1000 and I stll want to drive her. Can't invest $2000. Maybe $500 max. Any suggestions?

Wrap the frailed wires with electrical tape: just insert a length of tape between the two wires starting as close to the contacts as you can, then fold it along the long side (effectively creating an insulated jacket); repeat for the other wire. All you really need to do is seperate the wires and ensure they dont touch (short circuit).

It might be a bit cumbersome to get in there, but it's doable (I've done it).

Self fusing tape works even better than electrical tape.

Almost any wrecking yard w/ an ML or GL will have the wiring still - even if headlights are removed.
