Transmission lag when shifting in/out of reverse

Transmission lag when shifting in/out of reverse
There is a second or so lag before power is engaged after I shift into or out of reverse. I always fully stop before making such shifts. Is this a "feature" or what?
(I remember this happening on my new Benz's in the 90s, regardless of model).
No codes, No other shifting anomalies. Trans recently serviced, road tested by mechanic. Did this since I've had it.

purchased at 135k miles and has been doing this since then. I've seen transmission fluid service videos on YouTube where the STAR system reports a similar lag between the requested and the actual gear as well.

Mine's been doing it since I purchased it used. But I've experienced the same thing on new ones bought in the late 90's, early to mid 2000's. Had the trans serviced recently and no problems were found. I also recently changed both the main and aux batteries, which had no impact. I suspect it's a designed-in thing to prevent damage by those who shift from reverse to drive without fully stopping. (Although, personally, I feel they, not I, should suffer for their actions).
