Transmission Fault - Intermittent

Hi guys,

I have a 2009 X164 GL450 CDI that has had some transmission related issues over the past few months. At worst the vehicle gets stuck in Emergency Running (only P, D2 or R available). I suspected a battery issue and replaced the battery which cleared many voltage related codes, and following a subsequent thinkscan reset managed to clear all codes and the car drove perfectly.. for 1 day... The vehicle is stuck once again in Emergency Running. I drove whilst viewing live data, and the 'Actual Gear Position' indication is not being received. Im not sure if this is a product of Emergency Running Mode or the causal factor.
The following are current codes:

TCM - 1693 : Component Y3/8n4(Fully Integrated Transmission control(VGS) Control Unit) Is Defective.
VG Transfer Case - 290C : One Or More Signals Sent From Control Unit Y3/8n4(Fully Integrated Transmission control(VGS) Control Unit) Via The CAN Bus Is Implausible.
VG Transfer Case - 2903 : No CAN Message Was Received From Control Unit Y3/8n4(Fully Integrated Transmission control(VGS) Control Unit).
ISM Intelligent Servo Module - U010187 : Communication With Control Unit 'Transmission' Has A malfunction. The Message Is Missing.
ECM Engine Control Module(CDI) - 2211-001 : No CAN Message Was Received From Control Unit ETC.
IC Instrument Cluster - 9103 : Control Module Transmission Control Is Not Sending Any Data.
XALWA_L - Xenon Headlamp, Left(Front End CAN Bus) - 9067 : No CAN Message Was Received From Control Unit Transmission.

Any ideas of places to start and possible fixes would be much appreciated.

Have you parked it out in the rain recently?

P.S. "CDI" is diesel but GL450 is gas.

Good to know. I was assuming the CAN bus errors pointed to the gateway or some such.

Right you are.

That seems like a nice motor. I wonder why not sold in the U.S.

Probably too reliable. Hence it stays in Europe. haha

But that would be nice, 512 lb of torque!

valve body

If you drop the valve body to remove the board and send it away or repair it.. make sure you look at the 8 shift spools and 2 Orings per spool.
The biggest issue will be if you go to replace the module it will have to be coded to your car. Be careful wasting money buying used ones and not hanging the ability to code them .

Thankyou for your input. Will be taking this to a local mechanic to investigate - what would you expect the cost to replace this component? (i understand different countries will be different)

$3-4000 us if you let an Indy or mb touch it:
if you clean the vb and have it sent out for resealing at a third party; $400 plus the cost of fluid. It really depends on how much of this you can DIY yourself..
