Acceleration 2010 GL450 4MATIC

Hello everyone,

I have the 2010 GL450, 120k miles on it and it drives amazing. I notice that if I ever floor it from a stop, the engine almost redlines and I feel like Im pushing the engine really hard. Yes it gets up and moves, but it feels like if I floor it, it would be bad for the engine. Is this because it is a heavy SUV? Is flooring it bad for engine? It feels better from a roll, but from a stop it feels like the engine is working extremely hard. I only do it for fun sometimes.

1st gear is very short. Use the paddle shifts to try and get it into 2nd. My guess is that starting hard in 1st forces the car to overrev and then takes a few gear changes before the engine can slow down. I think you want to be around 3500 rpm for peak acceleration from when I've looked at torque/power maps.

Flooring any vehicle, especially from a stop, is bad. And even worse if you do it before the engine is at operating temperature. Adding the weight and age of your GL only makes it worse. Not only does it stress the engine and drive chain, but also the tires, suspension and other components. Plus, it doesn't do any favors to its already horrible gas milage.
It will be a lot less fun having it towed to your repair shop.

meh... I don't think it's that bad to floor it once and a while lol They do have built in rev limiters haha

I'm talking about the effects of torque on a 14 year old, heavy vehicle. But, it's your vehicle. If you think it's worth it for a few seconds of fun, why ask?

Sorry this was really diesel specific advice. I keep forgetting that you lot out east usually have gas versions. The first gear is very short still though.
