2014 ML and GL will get different temperture control knobs

Anyone holding out till 2014 should be happy to know that there is a high chance that the temperature control knobs will change to electronic screens ( like the 2014 E class and CLA)

Edit: The above is what I speculate will happen, no info has been provided by MB.

Not sure that is ALWAYS an improvement.... electronic touch screens require the touch to be recognized and depending upon different situations, people, temperatures and a lot of other factors ... touch screens can sometimes not respond, over respond, etc. Also.... the touch screen concept requires that the person doing the touching actually look at the screen to get the right touch point, if that is the driver, not always so easy. Saw an article recently that said "remember how easy it was to just turn the knob and find your radio station?!"

I should clarify that to change the temperature you still use an up or down button but the actual display of the temperature is no longer in the knob, its on a separate screen beside the keys, its a cleaner more high end look IMO

Edit: Added Pictures

from this...

Ok.....that I can handle! Moving everything to a touch screen format, much like the newest caddy, just isn't practical as far as I am concerned.....doable, yes, but not practical for driving ....just like typing on this iPad....it works but is prone to error if you are not careful.

the system they use in the fords and gm's like the " my ford touch" is absolute garbage, most auto journalists bash it in reviews. You cant even use it in winter with gloves on!

Looks like they are adding the center clock too like the S and 2014 E-class and redoing the speedometer and tach setup...Overall new vent configuration and nav screen reminds me of the 2013 E-class.

Must speedo on the 2013 GL is a little bit small but am happy with the overall setup.

Will make the 2013s that much more unique I guess

Agree, though would make the touchscreen compatible gloves I received last X-mas more relevant...

looks nice-
i personally prefer the twin guages for the GL- look nice and sporty, now if the size of the guage, needles etc changes- doesnt bother me too much..
the digital display is nice and accents the new updated command system well, but I agree with the earlier post, kinda prone to error, also personally I dont like BIG numbers displaying on the dash, i kinda prefer the subtle, light on number look- either way, as long as theres no BIG external change, i'm ok with it- only thing i'm a little concerned about- maybe MY 14 or 15 GLs may have LED headlights like 14 e63amg- but who knows-- not sure how different that would look, maybe more aggressive.. hopefully the 550s dont change the the shape of lights etc..

thanks for the info- did confuse me quite a bit at first, but in the end i guess didnt change my decision--

Are you sure about this change or only speculating?

I agree with the consensus above. I hate touch screen interfaces in the car. I need the affordance of a physical button when I'm driving as it's so much faster and safer to feel for a button with the occasional glance than having to search for that touch screen button and seeing your finger press it. I just don't find it as safe for driving situations- which is why I question the all touch interface of the Tesla S and upcoming Tesla X. (also finger prints are very annoying for someone **** about keeping things looking clean like me)

I am purely speculating, I dont see any reason why it would not be in the GL since its a more premium vehicle, 2.5-3 times the cost of the CLA. If its not going to be like the E-class than its almost certain it will be like the unit in the B-class

So far I know for a fact that the 2014 E class will have it , the 2014 CLA and 2013 B class have something similar but with a knob and temperature display beside the knob and also know that the C class does not.

P.S I agree that the dial is allot easier to find without taking your eyes off the road, the up and down temperature buttons are much smaller to find.

Here is a picture with the unit ON ( 2014 E class)

2013 B class

2014 CLA

Touch screen tech is like every other new tech that comes along.....it gets taken to the extreme in the name of "gee whiz sales" and is applied to situations that are more silly than make sense....touch screens on refrigerators come to mind.......and then ultimately ( maybe) causes issues that were not anticipated.

Agree, we have touch screen on our fridge and it's a time waster when you need to make an adjustment. It looks sleeker I guess since buttons disappears when not in use, but not sure who cares about their fridge looking sleek?
