Back up light issue

Possible. Lighting though doesn't explain why the rear camera on non surround systems seem to work - unless they are using different rear cameras. This, like the east rear entry system (with the headrests) are just two very poorly thought out and designed features which MB has been ridiculously slow in fixing.
In my mind they are two different issues......1. the 360 cam system vs. the standard cam 2. very low lumen output of the backup lights ( forgetting the cams for a moment......and just using the outboard mirrors .... there is not enough light back there to see much of anything!) The backup lights on my Ford Fusion are MUCH brighter. The standard cam on my 2011 was "clearer and brighter" than the 360 cam system on my current 2013 GL.

We are picking up our 2015 GL350 on Wednesday, I was reading through this thread and I had immediately thought to put a light on the trailer wiring harness. This is our first MB, so forgive my ignorance, but why won't the computer allow it? Is it sensing an over amperage that could be solved by running a relay? Or does it not output reverse lights to the trailer?

My dealer tried to find the Dec 1 software update you mention, and couldn't. Do you have an IL # they can reference? Is the update applicable to all X166s with surround, or just certain models (350/450/550/63)?

too in the dark, old GL450 camera was at par compare to this so called 360. Mine is 11/2014 production build would this update have already been installed on my GL or do I need to get it updated? Any thoughts.

So I took the GL in for the software update yesterday. They told me it will take 45 minutes. got a shuttle ride back to work. 4 hours later the service manager calls and says "the update is completed but we couldn't calibrate the cameras because of the rain and the traffic" he explained that they have to drive the car in a straight line one mile per camera between 2 mph and 12 mph on a clear sunny day. so they could not complete the calibration and now there is no camera function. they said it will take 3 or 4 days to do because of the holiday and the weather. I refused to take the car back without any camera function. I am in a loaner now and hopefully will have the GL back this Friday. I am a little concerned at this time because the service tech told me this is the first update they do like this and basically they have no experience with calibrating the cameras.

Great news. They called me this afternoon and told me that they were able to calibrate the cameras. I am very happy to report that I do in fact notice marked improvement in image quality at night. very happy with the results. I recommend this update for anyone with the surround camera option.

Great news. They called me this afternoon and told me that they were able to calibrate the cameras. I am very happy to report that I do in fact notice marked improvement in image quality at night. very happy with the results. I recommend this update for anyone with the surround camera option.

I too have had great success with getting my 360 camera software updated at the dealer under warranty. IT’S MUCH BETTER! I can now see fine when backing up in the dark.
They said the software update came out 12/9, not 12/1 as I heard from the OP. They said they didn’t have to do a road calibration as another poster mentioned.
Here’s what they put on the service report:
360 degree camera software fault 0070 90011 *** 54-0650, 0010, maintain on-board power supply. *** 54-1011, 0020, perform an initial diagnostic quick test. *** 54-0991, 0030, program 360 camera as per LI54.65-P-059114. 54-0992, 0010, code 360 camera control module. Road test.
