2013 GL550
If your GL550 has the Continentals on it, then I would suggest snows if you drive in snow regularly. Mine originally came with the Pirelli all-season and were not bad in the snow. Via a service action, I got all of the Pirellis replaced with the Continentals last month and they are not very good in the snow. They are technically a summer tire. I will wait until next fall and do a separate wheel/tire combo with dedicated snows or just swap tires if someone comes out with a decent 21" snow tire.

2. Yes. Snows are always much better in cold, snowy and icy conditions than all season (aka no season tires). If you get significant snow and ice, with the 21"s I think snows would be very wise.
Search for snow tires and looks for Cincy8 I think. She/he put snows on 20" MB wheels and has been very happy.

For my GL 550, I got a winter wheel/tire pkg from dealer with discount using my MBUSA club membership. They put them on for free. I got the 20". There were 3 options at the time 'engineered for the 550'.
With all the winter this year, I'm glad we did.
Our stock 21" tires were Continentals. We looked them up to see they are rated poorly for snow & ice.

295/40/21 Pirelli scorpion winter. Unstoppable in the snow, great on ice, rain, and dry performance.... Just take them off once you start seeing warmer temps as no dedicated winter tire will last.
the contis that come on the AMG 21 inch wheel are outright dangerous in the snow.
