Coolant Temp

Quick question, since I got the car the coolant temperature on the car seemed abnormally high, but I ignored it as I thought it was normal. However, since then I've driven many many cars, and all don't go higher than half of the gauge.

On my GL, I'm always at close to 100 degrees, although other cars' gauge don't tell you temperature, but is this normal? I wanted to ask you guys before taking it to the dealership.

Mercedes-Benz GL 450 4matic
engineer

My car GL 450 4MATIC was over heating to about 110 degrees.C which I feel was too high, having been used to Japanese cars with max cooling water temperature at 60-70 deg.C.
I therefore adapted another fan to the radiator in place of the original fan because i couldn't source the defective module attached to the fan. This was about two months ago.Thereafter,I noticed high cooling water temperature up to 110deg.C
I was made to change the thermostat. There after,I began to hear a thumping sound in the cooling water system. This happens when its like the thermostat is making a tapping noise and you could see the bubbles returning to the transparent plastic expansion tank! Although, the cooling effect on the AC system seems normal.
The original fan with the module was re installed, but the thumping noise is persistent with engine now running at 99deg.C.
How can I reduce the cooling temperature to about 85-90deg.C and stop the thumping noise in the fooling system. LOOKS LIKE THE RATTLING OF THE THERMOSTAT IS CAUSING THE BUBBLES IN THE WATER TO RETURN TO THE EXPANSION TANK.

My GL 450 4matic operates with cooling water temperature at 110deg.C.I feel this is too high.
Moreover it developed a thumbing noise in the cooling water system.Looks like the thermostat brings a tapping noise inside the cooling line.I have changed the radiator to new. The thermostat was changed to new also. The thumbing noise developed after thermostat was changed. During the thumbing noise, you can see bubbles retu to the transparent expansion tk.What can I do to stop the high temperature and thumbing in the cooling kine?

110 degrees Celsius mean you are overheating engine. Normal temperature suppose to be around 90. Sound you hear is a coolant boiling in system. Could be number of things.
1) Thermostat - probably not the cause since you changed it
2) Fan - is it working? Do you hear it engage?
3) Least probable - coolant pump (since it is mechanical)
4) Coolant reservoir cap - yes, some of those won't keep the pressure needed for proper functioning.

5) Is the cooling system filled with approved coolant or water? FWIW, the ethylene glycol additive in coolant both reduces the freezing point and increases the boiling point. Water, meanwhile, boils at 100C.

Seems like all the things you list except the thermostat would send the temp off the scale and not keep it running at 110. Losing any coolant?

Same! I have a GL550 and that was the first thing I noticed. But never had an issue, never overheated. Coolant and radiator are all good. I guess it's just a MB GL thing.

Sounds to me like there is air in the lines that need to work their way out. When you filled it with coolant after replacing the radiator, did it take the full quantity required?
