Transmission Issues

I have a 2008 GL450 and I have noticed recently a noise I suspect is telling me I am low on Transmission Fluid. I have not found a way to check it and I suspect I will need to take it to the dealer. True or False.

It is a distinct hum that is not forever but when you start up and turn, you can hear it especially coming out of the garage and a sharp turn and pulling out of the driveway.

Thanks, It was the power steering fluid that was down and I found the reservoir and we are back being quiet. I now know I have a W164.
