2013 GL450 leaked all coolant on garage floor
Hey everyone,
This is weird: we got home today, and 10 minutes after we shut the car off, we went into the garage and found coolant all over the floor from our GL450 (with a puddle exactly where the coolant reservoir is and the coolant going all the way to the back of the car). The car (appropriately) said "check coolant level," so we called mbrace roadside and they're going to tow the vehicle. Kind of odd for a 33,000 mile, 2013 GL that has been serviced, and had nothing wrong until 10 minutes after we stopped driving.
Will keep everyone posted. Has anyone had any similar experiences?
Thanks!

I had a '09 GL450 do the same thing at less than 1,000 miles. It smelled and looked like coolant fluid. I took it in and the service tech told me that it was the transmission cooling system. I guess these AWD vehicles have a separate cooling system.

The dealer called and said that they spent a good amount of time today trying to figure out just what happened and that their tests were completely inconclusive. In the mean time, I'm stuck with two loaners: a '15 GL450 for my '13 GL450, and a '15 ML350 for my '12 GL450 (which was due for service, and we left there as that's the car we drove to the dealer while the other one was being towed). On a kind of irrelevant note that is also still relevant, I am really not a fan of the new V6 in the GL450 -- at least compared to the M278 4.6 liter V8. Interestingly, the dealer said today that they want to let us out of the '13 lease and allow us to get a new '15...it will probably end up being a GL550 now.
Will keep everyone posted. Ideas, comments, questions, etc are always welcome!
Also, check out the pictures I attached. It's not really clear, but there's a really big puddle of coolant (or whatever it is) right under where the reservoir supposedly is. Then we moved it outside, and same thing (more clear here).

Sure it's coolant - email the tech you're photos? Let us know what they find out.
Had you recently filled it - wondering if it was overflow after a hot run as it doesn't look like too much fluid.

No, I'm just assuming it's coolant -- it certainly could be something else. Emailing the tech's the pictures today. I haven't filled it recently. There's actually more that you can't really see from the pictures in a puddle (it looks like less than there actually was). It's kind of odd.
I'll keep everyone posted!
Thanks!

That's what I thought, but it's blue and smells like coolant. And when we turned the car's electronics on, it said something to the extent of "no coolant" and the engine wouldn't start. (I think I forgot to mention that before -- my bad)
Thanks. Will keep everyone posted.

Now we're cooking, yeah that would be a problem.

Sorry everyone -- I got really busy over the past few weeks. I got the car back, and the dealer said it was a valve issue. It's been running perfectly since, though!

Hmmmm....wonder what he meant by that? What "valve" ( assuming a closing/not closing issue ) would cause that?

Gl 450 -2013 coolant leaking in driveway
My warning light went on went to gas station to check. Attendant wanted to see manual and then decided he was uncomfortable using universal coolant so I called Mercedes emergency road side service hoping for guidance on recommended fluid but she explained she had no info could only offer a tow so organized a tow to dealership which is not open so don't know results of assessment. When Vehicle was moved to get it on flat bed I noticed drops of fluid all over the driveway where the vehicle had moved. Had not noticed this prior. But the light was on earlier and attended at first glance didn't think it was too low or that the temp was too high. But after reading manual he determined it was low enough to require more coolant.
I think that the Mercedes road side assistance reps should be able to share the recommended brand of fluid so that a person can top it up to be able to drive to service Dept. We are not always going to be near a service station.

I had a similar issue on my 2013 GL450 with approx 22K miles when it happened. Got the low coolant level warning. One morning, I found a puddle under the driver side hood. I topped off the coolant and made an appointment a few days later to the dealer.
They changed the hose on it and seems to resolved the issue. Was covered under warranty.

Thanks...I got it fixed. Unfortunately, I'm about 5,000 miles past the warranty. The fix cost ~$500. Hard to believe they put such a cheap hose there for the coolant that it would wear completely through in just a few years!!!

mine was a 2013, somewhat disappointed with the quality of these plastic parts...

i had the turbo coolant pipe issue couple of years ago and an indy shop replaced the pipe.
lately i have noticed a slow leak (last time when the coolant pipe went bad the leak was quicker, i'd refill and next day it would be low again), the low indicator would come on every a few months and i have been topping it up. lately i have noticed small puddle (not a lot maybe a few drops) on my garage floor semi-regularly (seems like if i leave the car there long enough i will see some), under the the driver side front pumper. looking under the hood i can see some liquid pooled on the tray around there. took it to another indy but the guy said he pressure tested it and can't find the leak?
