X166 Spark Plug Change?

Has anyone done a spark plug change on the X166 M278 engine? I'm not sure if the access is from the top or bottom. I've search and could not find a DIY on this engine.

A gaggle of MB's
I don't know of anyone who has reached 100K to change OE plugs yet - there "might" be someone out there who has gone to upgraded ECU where "plugs" are changed to a slightly different temp range - maybe yes/maybe no...

I hear that it is a ***** on the M157.. I assume that you are going to replace the airfilters too? (I have a pair of BMC with 3K on them that I will sell you).. (on my GL63 they have tripped a check engine light twice per the dealer service tech) (and the tech pointed out that they let a fair amount of dirt in..... I'm dubious about that but I took them out anyway). I did run my GL550 to 87K with them and no issue..

PM if interested.

I'm sticking with oem filters, which are the best filters for this engine.

Here is an M278 spark plug video for W221. Lots will be similar with X166. Senior Leigh is user @39039 on this site.

My only guidance is to torque to spec and be very careful removing the clips to the ignition coils. I had two crack and had to replace them. Taking the wires out of the old ICs to put them into the new connectors was a PIA.

I have 72k on mine. Are those cheap $10 Bosch ones equivalent OEM? Anything slightly better?

I would use MB plugs. The indexing is accomplished by the combined tolerance of the spark plug thread and crush washer plus the torque spec. Thread and washer tolerance have the best chance of being correct with MB plugs. There is a pdf saved several times on this site showing what a non-OEM plug looks like from an indexing point of view. Spend the extra money and get the OEM plugs.

Ok thanks. I used non oem $6 Bosch on my other car. Can’t tell any difference in performance at all but I’m always thinking in my head if I should have spent more on it.
