Question Towing in mountains

I have a 2014 GL350 (Blue Tec) and plan to tow a 6500 lb trailer in Co mountains next summer. Has anyone experienced any transmission troubles or added transmission cooler to avoid problems? Any other experiences to be concerned with?

Thanks

This is a good thread to read and contribute. There's a couple folks on there that do similar towing with their GL350, mention mountain passes, and I don't believe any of them have done any modifications. Enjoy!

I'm curious what the towing capacity is of your vehicle? torque?
that trailer.. 6500lb would be empty? how much do you think with water and stuff?

the reason I ask is.. I have a boat.. 6500lb (empty).. a trailer would be 1100lbs..all I want to do is pull locally but......

The specified load limit for our X166 GL's is 7500 lbs.

I thought that maybe the diesels might have better figures (in praise of the oil burner).

That point is probably correct. However most of the time towing capacity is dictated by the braking capacity of the vehicle.

GL350 Bluetec, 2014
Not to make you leave this forum you might go over to the Airstream travel trailer forum and search GL350. There is a wealth of info there from several GL350 Bluetec owners who have traveled the mountains specifically and all other road challenges. try this link
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f463...tec-83756.html

Your 6500# is right in the target range of most of their Airstream trailers. I bought my GL350 specifically to tow an Airstream that will be about 5700# dry and I was told by an expert on trailering in Canada that the GL Bluetec would be an ideal TV and offer the best comfort ride to us over any other ride out there.
