Bumper dent, fixable or need to replace?

I backed into another car and got a minor dent on my rear bumper. As the picture shows, it damaged the chrome step pad and caused a small dent below it. I already ordered the chrome step pad, but was told by someone that usually any dent in the bumper = replacement since it is plastic and foam inside. It seems crazy that an entire bumper would need to be replace because a small dent like this. I'm taking it to a body shop this weekend but wanted to know if anyone here have had luck popping dents like this out.

Thanks in advance

It looks like the chrome piece is keeping the bumper dent from popping back out by itself. Actually, you might even be able to fix that chrome piece, if you're comfortable with nylon hammers and pieces of wood. Might at least be worth a shot - nothing to lose, right? It's hard to tell in that picture, though, but is there spider cracking of the chrome finish? If so, that would take a little more effort (money) to get it re-chromed and it might not be worth it in the end.

That's not true. If you had really smashed into something and crumpled the entire foam and plastic structure inside the bumper and then the cover popped back out, then there would be some value in replacing the internal pieces. But...since it looks like you tapped something, you probably just need to have that chrome piece replaced.

I barely bumped into someone in my 09 GL and it cut the plastic bumper cover. I took it to a Mercedes certified repair shop and they fixed the cut in the bumper, repainted it and it was good as new. Maybe it cost me $600 or so but that was to remove, patch, and repaint the entire bumper cover by a quality shop. 4 years later when I sold it, it still looked perfect. I had a very good experience with the Mercedes certified shop. I know there is no common ownership, but if you take it to one of the certified shops, if you feel like they are trying to rip you off, you have some recourse by complaining to MBUSA about them. You have no recourse at any other shop.
