Competitor?
I still love the GL and still have hope however MB had better step things up fast or the build and brand for purchasing decisions will soon become a thing of the past.

The xc90 is a very nice SUV. The fit and finish are not cheap at all. It appears larger then the video above. The info system top notch.
The seats are nice but did not have the cushy feeling the GL has. Also, it lacked the door closing build the GL has (if you know what I mean). I did not get a chance to drive one due to lack of time but I might go back to test drive it.
For $75k or less I can walk out the door with a fully loaded xc90 with every option. Now, I haven't driven the GL in a while and do not own one yet so its difficult to compare but from what I remember the GL had a more solid feel. It just lacked the technology.
I took one for a test drive and posted up some thoughts at: https://mbworld.org/forums/gl-class-...refresh-3.html
It is very nice inside (IMO) - modern and airy, iPad quality center console, every safety feature under the sun, nice ride and comparatively would save you some change.
Feels a bit smaller.
Negative is the engine size - 4 cyl turbo supercharged. Maybe the T8 with the added electric motor would be the cure for that (and give you 20 miles of pure EV).
I waited for it before buying GL550. After test driving it i knew right away its not of my taste.
Dashboard is very nice, however not as classy when you compare it with designo option from GL.
Seats are nowhere comfortable as the ones on GL.
3rd Row is useable, much better than my 09 Q7, still not better than overall leg space in GL.
Engine is quite underpowered when its hauling family of 7 with cargo. and its lags serious torque when its shifting gears.
Towing capacity is a joke when compared to competition, even Q7 has much better towing specs.
I liked the trunk space in XC90, maybe MB can take few tips from it and make cargo space behind 3rd row more useable with smart thinking.
