18" wheels x166

I wonder if anyone has experience with -1 wheels (18") on an x166 (Bluetec). I have gotten conflicting information. The manual indicates that 18" wheels with 265/60-18 all terrain tires are an allowed alternative to the stock 275/55-19 all season tires. The dealer says no, as does the Tire Rack configurator. An old forum post indicates the issue is with larger front brakes in US models but others have said that this only applies to the gas V8 models and 18s can work with the Bluetec. Anyone have any more information about this?

Have 18"s (stock wheels from '09 GL) on my 2013 GL350 right now. Sold my 2009 GL320 with the winter tires and rims on it so I had almost new tires on 18s in the garage. Test fitted with no issues.
6k miles and counting, no problems.

Just keep in mind that not all 18 inch wheels are shaped the same and you have to get the fitment correct to be sure you have the right clearance. I think Mercedes presumes in the owners manual that you'll use a wheel it offers and not just any off-the-shelf one.

btw, I am running 285/60/18 with no issues.
This is a common truck tire size sold at a "fair' price.

Would 18s also fit a 550? Manual shows 19s. Need a winter set up...

550 has larger brakes, from what's stated here. Stick with 19". They come up for sale here, OEM wheels with tires you can strip and sell, and OEM wheels meet MB standards for performance and appearance durability. Try W166 and X166 variant forums and the classifieds.

Btw I just tried 18” it wont fit any GL with AMG package (upgraded brake) due to the rotor and caliper size. I ended up going for 20” and a set of 275/55r20 (a bit oversized)
