Porsche Macan Turbo
X166 2013 GL450 vs X164 2012 GL550
Hi There,
I'm in the market for a commuter car with decent cargo space. We currently have a Porsche Boxster GTS and Porsche Macan Turbo, and considered adding a Cayenne to the stable, but the it only looks marginally larger than the Macan and I think we'll need something larger.
So I've been checking the GL options and have come across some good 2013 450's and some 2012/2011 550's. Mileage and cost are roughly the same and while the 2013 is the new model year, the options available in the 1 year older 550 look compelling. I don't know enough about the GL to really determine which would create least buyer remorse. For example, does the final production year of the X164 have fewer gremlins than the first production year of the X166? Is the difference in tech, engine, dynamics, reliability significantly different between them?
Appreciate any sage advic I can get on this question!! I'll drop the same question in the X164 thread too.

I would recommend the X166 450, simply because I like the newer interior layout a lot more than the older one. I also love the 4.6 Twin Turbo V8 in the newer one a lot more than the older NA 5.5. If you are buying out of warranty, a tune on the newer one, if you're into that sort of thing and inclined to spend as much, will put it at 500 bhp and 550+ ft-lb torque. For the things I look for in a vehicle, the X166 seems a lot more attractive.
Having said that, I can see how a nicer looks, interior and comfort package in the X164 can tilt the scales in its favor for some.

X164 doesn't "tilt" the scales versus the X166 - if for no other reason as the X164 has Airmatic issues with mileage - or age - that so far the X166 does not have.

Keep searching for a X166 that's to your liking option wise. There are plenty of 2013 450's for sale.
Coming from an W164 and 996 commuter, I prefer the layout/smoothness much better in the X166 and the more relaxed drive into the office than in the 996 (although less fun).

Ive owned loads of Cayenne Turbo's and whilst great as a fast SUV they dont compare to the GL63 i have now, at all. The GL63 handles surprisingly well, is as fast most of the time and has far better refinement.
I just sold a GL550 X164 because it felt held back and old, drive was miles behind the X166. Yes I agree it looks more muscular, its the main reason I got it, but the 166 is a huge step up and if you own a Macan then the X164 will feel old every time you get in it.
Id say go GL550 or if you can stretch, GL63 in X166. The GL63 is simply stunning to drive and live with day to day and Ive owned most vehicles outside of Lambo and Ferrari.
