CPO Requirements

Does anyone have any materials on the specifications a vehicle must go through before it can be labelled as a CPO vehicle? Specifically, break pad levels, fluid levels etc? Something more detailed than the paperwork with the check marks the dealer hands over to you at sale of vehicle.

Thanks

Car free at the moment
Here is a link to a copy of the MB CPO report card: http://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/Certi...-checklist.pdf

Ultimately the experience is dependent upon the dealership and how thoroughly they inspect and recondition the vehicle. I have seen CPO cars that really should not have been when a less than ethical manager was running pre-owned sales and I have bought cars that were reconditioned above and beyond the standard set out in the checklist.

@Shadow5501- Thank you for sending this over. I just picked up a CPO exactly a month ago. There was a squeaky noise that was annoying the hell out of me, as well as the brakes that appeared a bit too soft for my liking. I took the car in to the dealership closest to me that i use for all maintenance work and sometimes buy from as well. My service tech called to say the back brakes are pretty much shot and it's almost at metal on metal level. Additionally she said it doesn't appear that a brake fluid flush had been performed on the vehicle. This is what has prompted these questions as to what is considered a minimum for the dealer to do before the car can be listed as a CPO. I have called the dealership that sold me the car to get to the bottom of this. Of course now, i am curious as to what else they have cut corners on!!!!

We bought a CPO '14 ML350 last year. While I can't prove it, the CPO get staff must have sprayed, waxed, or otherwise covered up the corrosive stains on the running boards. After about 10 days of ownership, the stains began to reappear. Since the dealer was 3 hours away, and I had no way to prove they gave it to me that way, I let it go. The right rear tire also had a bad valve stem, likely from curb damage though the wheel itself was ok. I had to use pliers to get the cap off since it was crossed-threaded on. They had to know it was bad but they let it slide. Disappointing but not the end of the world. We got a great deal overall.

Since it was a CPO which means you bought from a MB dealer, you should have asked for all service records on that vehicle to know what was done previously. And anything done during the CPO would have been also included.

Still not too late. You can always ask to see the service records on the vehicle. I don't think the MB dealership can refuse you.

I know fabbrisd1 on this forum sometimes will offer to lookup service records if you provide the VIN.

I got the VMI from my salesman prior to purchase. I know he shouldn't have sent it but he did. He even sent me the internal invoice for all the work that had been done to make the car a CPO. $1,800.00.....

VMI has previous owner name on it. I got to see the same except my salesperson covered that part up.

When we looked locally for our first CPO, the sales guy let my wife drive it home to pick me up. We went back to the dealership and started chatting about the car. I asked when did it have it's last oil change and got a lot of yammer about the CPO process, etc. I said let me see it. So after "I gotta get permission, blah, blah", they showed me the VMI. That's when I discovered that 2 tires and rims had been replaced prior to the sale. Car was supposedly driven by the sales mgrs wife (oddly enough so was one we bought 3 hrs away). Got a little suspicious. Eventually sat down to try to buy the car but couldn't come to terms.

A gaggle of MB's
Well... couple of things...

1. Brake Fluid Flush is recommended B/20K service and/or every 2yrs.

2. CPO checklist is completed by the technician - service estimate is provided to approve by inventory/sales - then work is approved - service done - completed/clean checklist uploaded to MB to issue CPO on the VMI.
Have "some" dealers not approved specific items - like rear brake pads - for cost reasons - and then have their tech's report CPO clean - yes, I have seen vehicles when that has happened.
Reverse scenario - have some dealers have items done - like HVAC bacterial cleaning or injector cleaning - not specifically required by CPO - but are good things to be done ? Yes - and more often POSITIVE rather than than the other slippery negative

3. Is "next service" required to be done for CPO ? Example - does a 35K mile MB required to have 40K service done to meet CPO - technically no - but MOST dealers do do that POSITIVE THING

3. Is Appearance part of the CPO process - not really as that is objective -

Happy to report that the dealership that sold me the car has picked up the vehicle up from the other dealer and has put new brake pads on and has flushed the fluid as well. Car is being delivered to my office in the next 30 minutes.

Thank you all for the suggestions and info!
