2016 GL 550 Adaptive damping system question

Hello everyone,
i have a question about GL 550 suspension.
My strut need to be replaced, i have options #214-ADS, #489-AirMatic dual control.
I have purchased a strut from the vehicle with ADS and physically struts look the same, yet my old strut has an EXTRA BOX/MODULE ATTACHED to it and has some wires going to it. New strut doesn't have it. what is that little module may possibly do? I will get the vin for the other strut's car and see what suspension options it had.
Any comments will help.
when i looked up dealer part numbers for struts they were the same...
thank you

The extra box with wires coming out of it is part of the ADS system. If the new strut doesn't have it on it, then it is the wrong strut. If you are buying the parts from a dealer, the ADS equipped struts are considerably more expensive than a standard strut. If you are open to non OEM parts I would recommend Arnott industries refurbished units. I put them on my last GL and they were problem free for 100k. They replace the airbag with a high quality replacement. That is the part of the strut that begins to fail on most cars.

If the truck is a 2016 are you already out of warranty? I would think the strut would be covered under the factory warranty or even CPO if you bought it used.
