Hello, new member here. I currently have a 2012 GL350 with ~115k miles. I purchased it CPO in 2014. I have had all the popular repairs done but thankfully they were covered by warranty. Anywho, the CEL came on and per the dealer its the adblue heater sensor and about $2,000 to replace. I think its time for an upgrade.

The question is, will a CPO 2016 GL350 give me the same headaches as the 2012 did? Any improvements to the engine on the 16's? Or should i just wait and get a nice CPO 17 gls450? Thanks

The DIesel engine is still the same one they used in 2012: the OM642. I doubt much has changed reliability wise on the Diesel front in this engine or the accompanying emission equipment. I would recommend changing brands to an Audi or a BMW if having a Diesel is important. Otherwise, just get a 450 or 550 and call it a day. Cheers.

I think the OP has a earnest question for those that have experience with Mercedes diesels - and frankly from my experience Audi or BMW do not have any significant edge on diesel reliability over Mercedes.

YES - for any luxury SUV - it does make a world of difference between having a effective warranty - versus not having a warranty - especially after time and mileage add up.

All luxury SUV's have technically challenging systems - yes, diesel has AdBlue Systems..

Find the right rig - Mercedes Certified - gas or diesel make sure it has those key features you will enjoy most.

Now that we are into 2018 model year - and headed close to 2018 calendar year - all pre-owned become one year older - and good pre-owns now will be priced to market for less than they were during the 1st half of 2017

Keep the beat !

Thank you very much for the replies. I thought the engines were the same but was not sure. We liked the diesel for towing (horse trailer/boat), but we are not stuck on it... looks like we will be shopping for a slightly used 17' unless we find a screaming deal on a 16' diesel with warranty... Thanks again.

Just the other day someone posted they are having the same DEF issue in their 2013 @ 75k miles. Not sure it's the engine that's the problem but the supporting components. That said, 5 years from now you will be replacing another DEF heater more than likely.

Yeah, we traded it in for the 17' GLS. We'll see what, if any issues this brings us. Hopefully a non-diesel machine will be better. The twin turbo setup has me a little on edge as turbos are $$$.
