Parktronic uses sensors in the front and rear bumpers to determine distances between the vehicle and objects, and warn you using a series of yellow and red lights. The warning sound comes on when the 'maximum' allowable distance is reached. Apart from the warning, it does not do any active intervention.
Park assist actively helps the driver during parking by taking over the steering of the vehicle (only the steering). It is particularly useful in parallel parking (or maybe that is the only time you will ever need it).
