Late on 40k maintenance. Concern?

Hi all,

I’m looking at a 2015 GL450 CPO with 45k miles. However, the 40k maintenance hasn’t been performed yet.

The scheduled maintenance services were performed at a Mercedes Benz dealer as follows:

10-13-2015 10,872 miles

04-05-2016 19,538 miles

12-08-2016 30,532 miles

The dealer stated the 40k maintenance will now be performed as part of the CPO process, but is it concerning that maintenance hasn’t been performed in 15k miles, especially since the 40k service is one of the more important ones?

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks!

Happens quite often. If I’m turning in a lease or know that I’m trading the car I’m not gonna spend the $$ for 40k service. I don’t think it’s a big problem. BTW, you moved on quickly from the 2016 CPO! With CPO and ELW you should feel comfortable.

CPO gets CPO extension, ELW does not apply to CPO cars. Technicality, maybe, but coverages and pricing may differ. Jackson at Tafel MB is your man in either case, by the way, not the selling dealer.
No oil change for 15,000 miles and MB CPOs the car? Hmm.

Thank you all for your input. I’m going to pass on this one. One of the recurring themes I’ve seen in my research on the MB brand is the importance of sticking to the maintenance schedule in an effort to prolong the life of the vehicle. A couple k over may be one thing, but 5k over is a hard pill for me to swallow.

Hell, I'd call MB corporate's regional sales and service representative and ask what type of BS is this dealer pulling.

I would like to offer a different viewpoint. I don't disagree with being concerned about the length between oil changes. However, Mobil 1 on their website says it is good for 15k. If MB had a 15k interval, we wouldn't be talking about this.

Finding a CPO with the features you want can be difficult. When I went shopping for my '14 GL, I had the exact same concern. The GL I found locally had a 13k interval between last oil change and CPO service. I had asked to see the VMI and that's when I noticed it. But I also noticed that the rear main seal was replaced earlier in the life of the car. So I insisted the dealer put the car on a lift so I could examine the underside. I'm not a mechanic, but I decided that if I saw evidence of the leak I would pass on the car. Dry as a bone. I ran my fingers around the bottom pan to see if there was any accumulated oil not visible. None. So I decided to buy the car. I haggled over the fact it had been sitting on their lot for 2.5 months (Cinnabar Red), and I was a cash sale with a trade. My wife noticed that they would value your trade at the mid range of KBB. That made them come up $2k more on the trade value. That's a lot of money. So we bought the GL (43k on the clock at the time).

I guess the fact that the CPO warranty would be in place eased my concern about the oil change interval. The dealer did a B service at 43k, and I just got an A service Thursday at 53k. I'll get plugs, etc. at 63k. I will also purchase the 2 year CPO extension in May 2019.

I am very happy with the car. As the line from "The Road Warrior" goes, "The last of the V8 Interceptors".....

PS my 2013 Dodge Durango trade was wholesaled to a local used car dealer. I got $23k for the trade. The used car dealer listed it for $28k. 4 months later it was down to $23k and finally sold at or below that price.

I know I wouldn't be scared of that truck. 15k between oil changes with synthetic is not a big deal at all with a gasser motor. And it's possible that the previous owner had oil changes done in between that were not at the dealership. 40k is a major service, and the fact that it will be freshly done is a big plus along with being CPO.

Now if it were a diesel and had oil change intervals more than 3k miles, I'd be running for the hills.
