GL 550 grinding noise

I have just had the vehicle into the garage (twice in two weeks) with an engine warning light. Both times it was the same o2 sensor. They replace one upstream one and then a few days later both upstream ones. They even claimed having to contact Toronto to get more info (yep - I’m in Canada).

They kept the car for few days and did 100k to check that the engine light didn’t come on.

Anyway driving it home on accerlation I heard very loud exhaust noise ( coming from front ) that was louder in the cabin than outside. On a couple of occasions the exhaust noise was preceded with a loud grinding/grating sound maybe when going up hill, but I cannot be sure. On top of this performance seems sluggish - even in sport mode. Initially they said engineer had noted louder exhaust noise but says it’s normal noise for gl 550 turbos. All I can say it didn’t sound like this before. I’m really annoyed, the car has been fantastic up until now.

Anyone have any ideas?

Traction Control?

I’ve been trying to figure it out too. Happens when under full throttle acceleration…especially when turning - like turning right at an intersection and gunning it.

tried turning off traction control and replicating the driving style and noise still happened. Thinking now it’s something to do with 4wd….

What you describe sounds similar to what I had when the chain in the transfer case stretched and was skipping teeth. If that's the case, you'll need to replace the chain. Or get a rebuilt transfer case and send yours back as a core. This is what I did.

Thanks turns out it was an exhaust issue, where the garage hadn’t put it back together properly.

Thanks MTM. That’s certainly possible. Vehicle has 186k on the clock. Will recreate for tech next time in.

Oh you could even replace the bearings in there while at it.
