Question Possible OM642 rebuild

Seeing that a used OM642 costs nearly $10k, I'll probably be rebuilding my engine. Has anybody taken on this task? What's involved in it? Will a speedshop/machine shop be able handle the machining if needed. If not, why not? I've worked on American V8 engines, including complete tear down and reassembly--so, I do have a basic understanding of components. What are the hurdles I'm looking at with a modern MB Diesel. Will I need to get things reprogrammed after the rebuild?

I went to the MB dealership parts dept. today to see if they had a service manual or exploded view/diagram or assembly manual of some sort for the OM642. Unfortunately, the answer was no.

I am surprised no answers. Perhaps post to the diesel forum? Lots of knowledge there as well. I’d be interested to know if it can be rebuilt as well? What is/was the issue that you need to rebuild?

Go to the Sprinter forums. Then report back what you find.

Ok, I'll post on the Diesel forum. Also, which Sprinter forum are you recommending? I don't see a Sprinter section on MBworld.

I don't recall any, I stumble across them when I search, world wide web, for specific issues with our engine. Sprinters are the ones with the highest mileage and most experience.
