check engine oil at next refueling

Tried searching from my mobile phone with very little success. What does “check engine oil at next refueling” really mean? I haven’t checked yet, but will at my next refueling. I’ve got a 2014 CPO GL450 with about 62000 miles on it. Have had it for about 2yrs and haven’t seen this message yet. And if the engine needs oil, should I simply top it off? Or bring it in to MB for service?

Engine is low on oil. Top it off and take a picture of the mile so you can document it. These v8 twin turbo engine like to consume oil.

What Forrest Gump 9 said!

This has happened to our 2015 GL550 for two years now, roughly six months after the annual service ... and both times while driving on hilly roads! Our MB service advisor guessed the hilly roads part as soon as I described the error message and the solution is obvious, simple and free ... bring it in for an oil top up and a free car wash!

We can speculate that driving on hilly roads 'sloshes' the oil and eventually too much oil stays in the cylinder heads rather than the sump, but at most the oil level is less than a quart low after it all drains back so it's a nuisance, but not a problem.

Both times it happened to us ... in the Fall of 2017 and 2018 ... we simply drove to our dealership without so much as a 'phone call for them to deal with it. It's really no big deal, they always have Mobile One or the MB equivalent on hand ... and we get a free car wash!

As long as you don't shut down before you get to the dealership the error message will stay displayed. If you have to shut down take a picture with your 'phone to show them.
