Intermittent Violent Engine Shake while Idling

Intermittent Violent Engine Shake while Idling
The few other idling threads does not appear to be like what I'm experiencing ... on my 2013 GL450 ... once a week (sometimes once every two weeks) when idling at a red light (still in Drive gear), the engine shakes violently as if it's choking, like it's not getting proper gas/air mixture and comes close to dying and then it sorta corrects itself after one or two seconds and then back to normal idling ... first time it happened startled the bejesus out me ... any thoughts? ideas? before heading into dealer (so as to help them diagnose and trouble shoot) ... I swear sometimes they are clueless until I point out some of the specifics I found though the forums ... thanks in advance.

I had a similar issue twice last year, it was very weird, it idle like old diesel truck. I used to put Chevron but switch to Shell and haven’t had the issue since.

It could be anything with these trucks. How many miles do you have? Have you changed engine filter, spark plugs or battery since this issue started? If not, maybe it’s time? Also, do you have a code reader? If not, go to your local discount auto or Auto zone, they can read your codes for free. The car could be reporting something. It could also be bad gas…is that the same spot where you would normally fill-up? Try using a different station\brand.

Make sure the clamp is down and tightly sealed. This is the first cause for most of these symptoms.

wasn't expecting this from MB Service: "vehicle will shake and hesitate felt the vehicle vibrate while sitting at idle, the car would vibrate more when ac was on while sitting idle. did not see the car almost stall or anything like that. just vibrating from the driver side motor mount being bad. replaced both front motor mounts."
2 days now and car not experiencing symptoms ... sorta notice engine is "smoother" ... but totally not expecting bad motor mounts ... hmmmmm ... we shall see

thanks @pjw1967 ... ok "violent" a bit exaggerated, I would say "choking" and on two separate occasions, engine did stall and died ... as if out of gas or improper air/gas mixture ... just odd that it's intermittent, that said, she is smoothly purring

I had this same experience back in probably January? I had the car warming up while I was inside as it was cold out. I had the defroster on max, and when I got in the car to drive away is when it happened. You nailed it on the head when you said it shook violently as if it was choking. It scared me half to death to so I pulled over in my neighborhood because it felt like it was going to blow. I turned it off and let it sit for a minute and when I turned it back on I left the heat off the whole time. I froze half to death, but was worried it had something to do with the heat. I never could get it to do it again. The dealership couldn't get it to do it either. If it happens again maybe I will suggest the motor mount. I do have a 2014 diesel but it had never acted like this before. Thanks for posting!
