GL 450
My 2nd GL

Bought my 2nd GL (2014 450) after 1 month of research and testing driving 4 different GLs...
The V8 engine, suspension, drive/handling( yes handle like a middle suv but still a borderline large sub), brand prestige, comfort of 3rd row seat and automatic 2nd row and 3rd row are the main reason why I go back to MB.
IMO, this is the The Best or Nothing.

edit:
So I test drove a 2015 gl450, and realize they switched to v6. Did not like it. Did some research, realized they stop making v8 for 450 in 2014. Test drove a 2014, loved it. Sent it in for pre purchase inspection. Basically good except need brake pad.

lesson learnt here:
it is really annoying to used to to non keyless door entrance and keyless go. My old 2011 gl has both (even though at the end, only the driver side back door works, but since I drive my 3.5yo most of the time, it is ok because I would open that door first anyway to put her into her car seat anyway most of the time). Btw I just found out if your car does not have start stop function, u cannot upgrade that by buying aftermarket button. Disappointed.

love love love my biturbo v8, my old was just a regular v8.

btw someone mention the unreliability of mb v8 with turbo, is that true?

should I buy extended warranty? Was told it is a money pit, but I change my suspension a total of 8 times for my 2011 gl, so nothing is impossible...

Absolutely buy an extended warranty - you will either break even or come out ahead.

The GL’s are a hit or miss when it comes to issues. Some folks here go thru hell with issues while others hardly have any. Most of the issues are minor and not engine related.

Is the GL CPO? If so, I would go for the factory extended warranty.

Usually 3rd party warranties can be a big rip-off. However, when the turbos fail the entire engine has to come out and you’re looking at a +10K job (Dealer). Also, air suspension failure is not as common compared to the x164. Honestly, it’s the luck of the draw when it comes to the GL’s.

If you’re good with a wrench and have the time then, don’t get it, you are the warranty. But if you do, as Chedman mentioned: "you will either break even or come out ahead."
