Engine Rattle Sound + CEL = $7000 for Cam Adjuster
Had engine rattle sound (for less than 5 seconds on start) for a couple of weeks before the check engine light came on. Sent to the dealer and diagnosed "cam adjuster deviating from its proper position". Quoted nearly $7,000 to replace it.
It's a 2015 GL 450 with 77,000 miles. Out of warranty.
Got the car new and it has been very well maintained. A bit disappointed at MB's quality.
Looking for advice and options. Thanks!

Some folks would think that price is too high. Just remember it is a lot of work, the parts cost as well, and the place doing the work has to budget in the warranty. So if it breaks they have to work on it again for free. It will probably be more than just one cam adjuster that needs replacement as well as other parts that are discovered bad.

I would be upset at a $7,000 repair for a vehicle that is only 4 years old. I too have a CPO 2015 GL 450, and I purchased the extended 2 year warranty for under $2000 just 2 months ago to handle any outrageous repair costs. Not sure what I would do with mine for repairing if it was out of warranty. I am assuming this is the Mercedes shop. I would probably get a cost from a reputable European repair shop.
Maybe someone could recommend if this is a DIY job.
