Things I hate about my 2015 GL450
Headlights can’t be turned off..
windshield wipers have a mind of their own. Why give you all the settings when the computer overrides the delay or slow function when it rains?
Need the dealer to make a replacement key $500 now that’s just insane.. And only the dealer can make it!
im sure there are more that just don’t come to mind right now..

If you put them in parking mode they turn off.
Auto function works in off to stop people from driving without any lights on. Small price to pay and I appreciate it that it works like that.

You may be "over-thinking" how your GL is designed to work.
Why do you need to turn off the headlights if the vehicle takes care of turning them off for you? We've owned our 2015 GL550 for over four years and have left the headlight control in Auto the entire time ... the lights are either off or on as necessary without us worrying about them.
Likewise for the windshield wipers, the HVAC system, the radio and other automatic systems. They turn on when needed ... otherwise they turn off. We sometime adjust these automatic systems to make them faster/slower/louder/softer/warmer/cooler etc. but there's no reason to turn them off.

When I’m picking up my child from an evening activity at school and parked in the lot facing other vehicles and it’s 90 degrees out I don’t want to shine my headlights at opposing occupied vehicles while my car is running..
