Playing around today and sat in the third row to check out the AC and legroom with a walking boot on. Noticed the top air vents blew just seemingly air and not cold or really cool air. The 2nd row top air vents were cooler but not like reg AC cold. The door vents blew coolish air but not cold. The center console was the coldest but didn’t blow very hard on the highest setting.
Is this normal performance and I never knew bc I don’t sit back there??
Side note at 5’7” and with a walking boot on it isn’t too bad in the 3rd row. Prob not ideal for 2hr plus drives but it’s certainly Doable
Interested in feedback from others as mine does the same thing. The air coming out of the 2nd and 3rd row top vents eventually gets cold but take a long time to get there. The center vents hardly blow any air. I have the 3 zone clime control. 2015 GL 450
I just asked my daughter who routinely sits in the third row of our '15 GL550, and she says it's cool air but not really cold air, and the volume of air is certainly not like it is to the second row.
Well, the family started to complain about the AC situation in the back seats too so we took it over to MB. Service tech said the AC compressor is malfunctioning. He indicated that it goes off and on, it starts to cool and then normal air. As any MB part goes, they have to be ordered. He also stated that it's a common part to go out in the GL in the hot warmer climates in the summertime, he's done a lot of compressors recently. There were 3 other GL's in the line with A/C issues.

HOT damn .... was wondering about this ... especially in the summer here in SWFL ... times when it's nice and cold and then all of a sudden, barely cool air and it's frequent ... on and off ... could you share in detail the service/ticket diagnosis/description

Absolutely, the beast is waiting at MB for the compressor to arrive. Once it's done and installed, I'll post the service record. Funny, I'm in SE FL.

Yes very warm and humid here in Alabama. After this post I played with some settings and it got nice and cold after a drive. I don’t recall what I did but I will check again soon and share what I set.
I picked her up the other day and man does it blow cold air, what a difference. I guess it stopped working a long time ago, never paid any attention but, it does cool off much quicker for such a big cabin. I would say in less than 5 minutes the entire GL is cold (depending on pre-set temp).

I'm so hoping this is my case and that it's covered under ELW ... on a separate side note: did I read somewhere here there is a 3rd zone climate control (i.e., for the third row) ??? I didn't think such a thing existed for 3rd row ... my GL450 has a second row control unit in the rear of driver's center armrest ... on the main front passenger side of console, there are two half-circle buttons: top one indicates "ZONE" and bottom one indicates "REAR off" ...

It is covered, mine was done with the MB ELW.
I never heard of a X166 having 3rd row controls, I know the 2020 GLS will have something to that effect similar to what the new BMW X7 have.
I finally checked this out this past weekend. The air from the 2nd and 3rd row ceiling vents air is not as cool as the rear 2nd row vents at the back of the front armrest.
Got a Voicemail from my dealer ... "we found out what the problem is ... we've got an evaporator coil on order and it should come in on Thursday" .... hmmmm will be interesting to see the details of the service ticket ... will post some details ....
Hmmmm ... wasn't what I was expecting ... 2 days and man she's cold, consistent, 2nd and 3rd rows cold too ... keeping my fingers crossed that she lasts as long as "Austin" (my ride's name) ...
