m276 engine with 100,000 miles

My GL450 is about to cross the 100,000 mile mark.

Should I prepare myself for the following preventative maintenance?
Timing chain & tensioners
Poly V Belt
Water pump/thermostat
Anything else on the 100,000 punch list for the M276?

This car has been running well and is still under CPO warranty until 2021

Thanks,

What year is your GL450? The maintenance booklet and prepaid maintenance checklist call out:

engine air filter
spark plugs
engine oil and filter
cabin dust filter
brake fluid change
wiper blades

Poly-v belt checks are on the list, not replacement.

Nothing about water pump or thermostat, or timing chain.

Except for early models (pre-2014), timing chain problems don't show up often, or at all, on this site for the M276.

It's a 2015. So basically a standard B service + brake fluid and Spark Plugs? Sweet. I did spark plugs at 80K when I was losing power, and last fall I replaced the pads/rotors and flushed the brake system, so I'm already ahead of the game!

Thanks for the info!

How much longer are you planning on keeping your GL? Just curious since a lot of people are nervous to own them past 100K.

At least another year and a half under the CPO. My family averages 20,000 miles per year with this vehicle so I should be covered until around 125,000 miles. The only thing i'm REALLY concerned about is the airmatic, but the rear half has already been replaced under CPO at ~75000miles.

So far we love this vehicle. It's sporty enough despite the 3rd row of seats

As a current MB tech I really don't see any issues with the GL's outside of occasional airmatic issues, sometimes I'll see a strut or a compressor other than that I'd hold on to the GL as long as possible.

Brad-

Thanks for that viewpoint. I'm hoping to get as much life out of this car as possible. Glad to know there's no real Achilles' heals in this model!

Brad does that go for the GL 550 as well? I have a 2015. Currently with 73K miles. Hoping to get to 100K or further. Only issues Ive had so far has been one of the Coil packs went bad causing cylinder 8 misfire. Replacement of the coil pack took care of the issue. I have extended warranty to 100K miles.

Thanks

2015 ML350
I currently own a 2015 ML350 with the M276 engine that now has 115K miles and runs perfectly. I bought it with 58K miles. I drive a lot of highway miles and typically drive around 40K a year. I plan on keeping this for another two and a half years provided it continues to perform well so it will be well into 200K territory. I have not had any service required besides regular maintenance of any kind. It has ran perfectly. I run premium fuel as recommended.

I regularly maintain this vehicle and do the services myself. I use OEM oil filters and Mobile 1. I have replaced the brakes, air filters, brake fluid. Going to do a coolant flush when it warms up a bit outside and will also be replacing the spark plugs soon. They make a special thin walled spark plug socket with universal joint that helps with this task. This spring I will change the transmission fluid.

I measure oil consumption and between the service intervals it uses 4 ounces of oil between oil changes which is nothing, so little it is very hard to even see that usage on the dipstick. If you can do maintenance yourself they are really no more expensive to maintain than any premium vehicle.

These vehicles are well put together and if maintained well I don't see any reason they won't easily run to 250K of highway driving.

Thanks!

@Christopher63 Thanks for the post! Please keep this thread updated with your progress. I am targeting 200k miles also and hope to achieve this. My M276 has been fine so far, just oil leaks from the front cylinder head covers which is a common defect from the factory. The dealer repaired under warranty, after three separate requests, and so far so good.

2015 GL450
I’m glad I found this and I hope this thread isn’t dead yet. I have a 2015 gl450 and I’ve had it since it had 20k on it. I’ve maintained it myself very strictly. It’s up to about 94k and I’m going to try to see if I can’t get it to 300k for fun. During the summer I tow a boat very frequently so there is a little strain on it now and then. So far all I have done is put in one of the airmatic bags in the front driver side. I have the rest of the parts for the other 3 stored ready to go on when needed. I have been through 3 sets of tires and I’m almost on my 3rd set of brake pads. Beyond that, oil, transmission fluid, filters, etc. Normal maintenance stuff. Love working on it because it’s not difficult at all. I’ll try to keep updates going as I put on lots of miles. When I first bought it, the oil consumption was concerning. When it got to 45k or so, I’m down to about 4oz between changes as well.

Were you having issues with your ignition system? Seems excessive to change so frequently.

No ignition problems. I changed the coils as a matter of preemptive maintenance, and I don't like the stress on the boots created from pulling the tight and sticky fit of the boots on the porcelain. The MB assembly grease turns to glue and pulling the boots off requires high force. I replaced all 6 coils with the part number which includes the silicone heat shield sleeve, and lubed the porcelain on the new plugs liberally with dielectric grease. Next plug change should be easier than the first two.

I am targeting 200k miles for this vehicle, and intend to change components that "shouldn't be changed" per MB. Four examples that have been completed are the poly-v belt, transfer case oil, front axle oil and rear axle oil.

On my 2007 GL 450, I didn't change the plugs for 200k miles. It would have easily hit the 300k+ mark had it not been for water intrusion issue totaling the car. Hope the 166's are not so porous as the 164's.

So far 166 seem to have only the rear liftgate perimeter seal that can separate at the rubber fused joint, which happens to be at the lowest point near the latch. If the seal separates/ruptures, water goes wherever it wants and wreaks havoc.

I just checked my liftgate seal tonight and so far it looks OK. It doesn't seem like a high occurrence failure, but it's a nasty one.

Not many (any?) reports of taillamp gaskets leaking on 166 which seems common on 164. There are fewer or no electronics in low-lying locations in the rear of 166, unlike 164.

Yes, transmission oil changed just before 60k miles, and it needs it again now at 103k miles.

Now many liters for the 7speed tranny oil change?
Did you do change or flush of transmission oil?

No flush. I had the dealer do it. WIS calls for drain and refill.

Looks like the dealer charged me for 9 liters of oil. It is a fill to overflow process so the precise volume inside the gearbox is less than 9 liters.

'13 GL450 has had one rear shock and the compressor replaced and a Drivers side turbo oil line replaced, all under warranty.

I replaced the Turbo coolant lines at 78K, all fluids in all places (trans, diff, etc.) changed as recommended thru MB Service Intervals. I use the Liqui Moly flush and additive at oil change intervals, read good things about those products so why not give them a try. We got new tires and wheels at 81k and the car is cleaned on a regular basis. I run Lucas Fuel treatment in the car often and has helped gas mileage and I've read where it helps to protect the cylinder walls from getting scratched, I also run 93 octane on every fill up

Just now starting to get AC issues with the Drivers side, the Passenger side stays cold but the drivers side is having issues. Not sure if I need to change the freon in the car or if there is a temp sensor of blend door actuator going bad. Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated. The Center console lid on passenger side keeps flipping up, need to glue down a couple of magnets to fix that. Other than those issues the car runs great and looks fantastic, I'm a poor-boy and do all the work myself so we plan on having the car well into the 1/2-million-mile range with any luck!!

Which gives a (less than honest) dealer a perfect "opportunity" to overcharge. I was charged for 7 liters when mine transmission oil was replaced by the dealer 3+ year ago.

I just purchased the same "kit" from their parts department and they said that only 6 liters are needed to change (to flush, which they do not recommend at least for my car, 10 liters would be required).

2017 GLS 450. 140k miles. Dealer told me BOTH FRONT CYLINDER HEAD COVERS HAVE OIL LEAK and quote me $1,800. Is this a common defect and is my car too late for warranty service?

Yes and yes. Common leak, root cause is defective production process at the factory. At 6 years and 140k miles you are far beyond any warranty coverage, unless you purchased a warranty that covers you at such high mileage.
