Timing Chain
New member here.
Have a 2104 GL 350 84k miles , getting the timing chain replaced on it.
Can forum members chime in/ recommend any other maintenance items that I should have them take care of while they are in there.
Thanks

The poly-v belt is a good one to do at 100k miles, and you’re almost there. They already have it removed, so it is easy to put the car back together with a new belt.

As I was changing spark plugs today, I thought of the top and bottom radiator hoses. If the timing chain job requires the radiator to be drained, I would have them install new top and bottom hoses.

Is there any reason you are replacing the chain? I have a 2015 GL and a 2012 ML both with OM642 one with 77k the other 99k both running with original chain. The timing chains on those late model OM642s are pretty strong TBH.
If you are replacing the chain for sure, then do the injector seals at the same time as you will be removing the 3 injectors on passenger side anyways. The chain replacement is pretty straightforward after you pull the passenger side valve cover off, but it requires some expensive special tools to get the work done easily. They basically install a mount and then join the new chain with the old chain and then rotate the engine to loop the new chain on. After that disengage the old chain and then joint the two ends of the new chain, install a new tensioner and put everything back. Make sure you go with a new tensioner. There are folks DIYed on this you can check the diesel forum.

You can get affordable chain tool from Amazon. Will be fine for one time job.
Anyway check with service manual how to check chain stretch. May be no chain change needed.

According to WIS the chain stretch needs to be checked with a $500 special tool. It's essentially a tensioner with a measurement showing how much the piston is extending to keep the chain tension. On older OM642s the chain tensioner can be viewed through the oil filler port which can give you an idea of how much it has extended, however on those newer OM642s there's a deflector installed under the oil filler port that completely blocked the view. Maybe an inspection camera with a flexible neck can help though I haven't tried yet.

Hi
Does anyone here know if timing chain is covered under the Extended Emissions Warranty? my car has timing chain rattle during a cold start, I do not hear this rattle for rest of the day.
2014 GL350 with 59k miles.
this link shows the new Extended Emissions warranty covers the "Engine Timing Chain".

You answered your own question. But only if you have undergone the Emissions Upgrade.

I already changed timing belt last year and paid out of pocket. What are the chances that I can get reimbursed from MB for that?
On another note, think I need to change dealership for service. Asked the service advisor if he will ask MBUSA to reimburse me for timing chain repair that I already paid for, he flat out refused to even ask that question? SMH

My 2008 E320 Bluetec has 185,000 miles and no issues with the timing chain at all!
Mind you, I never believed/accepted oil change recommendations of 12,000 miles, or whatever excessive miles factory recommended.
It's been 7,000 miles highway driving, or 4,000 - 5,000 miles max if city/highway combined driving.
Oil is cheap, engines are not and most drivers should probably stay away from Diesels!!
