Will a 4x8 plywood fit?

Will a 4x8 sheet of plywood fit laying down flat with the lift gate shut and whats the most someone has towed comfortably? Also how does the interior quality compare to the w221?

I don't think a sheet of plywood would fit, but I haven't tried it. For towing, I've comfortably towed my 33 foot travel trailer, loaded it weighs around 7,000 pounds. I have a good weight distribution hitch with anti-sway, extended towing mirrors, and a brake controller. I also upgraded to higher load tires and increased tire pressure to 45psi. The air suspension on the Mercedes made towing very smooth, and there was no shortage of power with the GL450 even over the mountain passes and steep grades. Braking was no problem.

What towing mirrors do you use?

You can't get a 4X8' sheet of plywood to fit. The width will fit ok at an angle, but you only have about 80 inches from the door to the back of the seats. I had Home Depot cut the sheet of plywood I purchase in half. I also hauled a new door that was 80" tall. It fit, but I had to move the front seats a little farther forward than I usually do (I'm 5'-10") and the door sat on top of the flipped up middle row seat bottoms.

Plywood - no - BUT I did fit a full couple sheets of slightly flexible foam board insulation inside - I only had to drive a mile, and I had to angle them in just so, and the edges got smashed a tiny bit, AND I had to drive hunched over the steering wheel - I could barely fit in the driver's seat, but I did it. Plywood or other rigid sheet goods won't fit inside and close the hatch.

I have the Dometic Aero3 mirrors, they work fine with the folding mirrors. I've put them on and off at least 20 times and they've never scratched the paint. They come with a carry bag, so the mirrors don't get scratched when you take them off. They don't shake at 70mph, and you shouldn't be towing any faster than that anyway. I wouldn't tow much without extended mirrors, the standard GL mirrors are tiny for an SUV.

It looks like there are a few different sizes of the Aero3 mirrors. Do you have any pictures of yours?
