Clunking from the rear from a stop to hard acceleration

When I go from a dead stop to a hard acceleration (more like push the pedal pretty hard to get going) in my GL350 it creates this clunking sound like I'm running something over. I've heard it in the rear when doing it and the front. It will stop when I left off the gas and go a little more slowly. It will work fine if I just ease onto the gas, but if you go hard on the gas it causes it. This has been going on a few months now and the dealer thought they knew what it was but they were wrong. I even had the service guy get in the car with me and he said he knew what it was. They said it was a bolt loose on the transmission mount. I've had that replaced....new motor mounts a year and a half ago...but not sure what this is. It didn't solve the problem. Upon some research, throughout the web, I've heard it could be the transfer case. It's like a chain is slipping. My husband thought it sounded like the gearbox...but it's something to do with that I guess. Anyone had this issue? 138K miles.

Engine mount, transmission mount or propshaft center support bearing (mount). Check those easier and less expensive things first.

Lol- sometimes you just have to really accelerate in certain situations. It shouldn't be doing this...

Engine mounts were replaced summer of 2020, transmission mount was just replaced 2 weeks ago (this is what they thought the problem was and it wasn't) but will look into the propshaft. I still think it has something to do with the transfer case. Was just checking to see if anyone on here has had the same problem. Thanks!

Possible goof up in the transmission mount replacement? Loose bolt?

No goof up in the transmission mount I don't believe. I get the same noise I got before they fixed the mount. It sounds like it's in the rear most of the time. I call it "clunking" but maybe I should also say it sounds like it's stripping and clunking together. When it happens you let off the gas because you're thinking your whole car is falling apart.

I had a “clunking” from the rear of my 85k mile GL550 (sounded like rear spare tire was loose, and bouncing around over bumps), turned out to bed two bad rear shocks. Doesn’t sound quite like your issue, but could be something related?

Actually, it is the transfer case as I suspected. I just took it into an independent Mercedes specialist yesterday afternoon and he confirmed that's what it is. New is $6K ugh...and he's looking for a used one. Although if I get a used one, who knows if that one will go out too. It's supposedly pretty common on GL and ML's.

I believe good mechanic can "rebuild" it by swapping chain

Transfer case chain hv098. About 100-200 bucks plus labor.

There is a possibility of different kind of chain hv091 - for magna steyr single speed transfer case. I would buy both kinds to see which one fits better if not sure. Still cheaper than 7k

Too many german broads
Also having what I believe may be chain slack. Dealer had no idea and acts clueless. OP, try replacement the chain, this seems like it is worth a shot as a first fix before spending any big bucks.
