Shaking when brakes are hot

I have a 2015 350 BlueTec. I have noticed that on longer drives, especially downhill, when a lot of braking is used, the car shakes when brakes applied. This doesn't happen on shorter drives. At the last tire rotation I asked the mechanic if slotted/drilled rotors wouldn't have this issue, and I was told maybe. Tires are rotated and balanced regularly. No other driving issue. Drives in a straight line.

Car shakes because you bake outer layer of braking pads to brake rotor. The rule of thumb is to use engine braking in lower gear then you go downhill

I had same exact issue on my 2011 Toyota Sienna, 2013 Audi Q7 AND 2016 Mercedes GL. The issue I had is going down a mountain and applying extended brake pressure. Once rotors heat up - terrible and outright vibrations on all 3 cars. SOLUTION: I replaced rotors on all 3 cars with Cryogenically Treated Slotted Rotors (any brand), and ceramic pads of any brand. I now have put over 120,000 miles on the GL350 with this brake setup and my pads are still at 50% and rotors show zero edging. Brakes like a champ, very confident at any temperature and any weather, especially rain. If you follow my advise and change your rotors to cryogenically treated ones it might save your life one day.

Cheers

To avoid warping rotors in the future, use engine braking on long downhill descents. Only when necessary apply the brakes, and apply them rather sharply and for a short time to reduce the vehicle speed below the prevailing traffic speed. Then let gravity and engine braking take over again.
