Alternative tire sizes for X166 (GL550)

Hello,

Hoping this is a quick question, quick answer situation…

I currently have all season Continental tires and want to get winter tires that handle better in snow. Current tire size is 295/40-21 but I have the opportunity to get some 275/50-21 (wheels and tires) inexpensively.

Will these fit my GL550? Anyone tried this size on their GL550?

The 295/40r21 is 30.291 inch in diameter. The 275/50r21 is 31.826 inch in diameter. There are a couple of threads here about tire sizes for the 20 inch rim and some are going to a 275/55r20 which has a diameter of 31.909 which is about 1 inch taller than the 275/50r20.I would say going by the numbers you should be okay. You lose 20mm in width but skinny is good for a snow tire. Search for the threads mentioned and read what is said about the taller tire. Other than your speedo being off there seems to be no ill affects with the taller tire.
