Oil Additives

Normally I wouldn’t even bring think of adding anything to the oil, but it seems like there is a problem with these engines on cold starts. I have the M276, and it’s pretty noisy on the first start. It doesn’t seem like MB even has a good answer. I’ve read all the threads. Asking the community for any success stories.

the lifters on a lot of cars, particularly higher performance ones need a few cycles before they are hydraulically filled with oil and the bearings have their cushioning film restored. what youre hearing is the chatter of the timing chain, bearings and/or the lifters before the hydraulic tensioner/lifters become pressurized to their normal operating status. everything in the tengine sort of "floats" and doesn't touch each other due to an oil film protecting everything which can drain back and deplete over time when the car is parked. Cars that store oil in the head have their own problems, theres always a compromise.

oil can/will influence the effect if you have thickened oil that doens't flow well you can have it be louder or last longer but you can't really fundamentally "cure" it.

You can always give amsoil a try and see if that helps. I personally use it in the fleet cars/customer cars here and I'm pleased with the amount of start up chatter on our cars. Amsoil themselves do not recommend using oil additives since it throws off the ph and chemistry of oil in addition to potentially compromising its ability to neutralize acid, cool itself, and last the full oil change interval without cooking off, thickening, or becoming acidic.

This is why I was told when I was a teenager to never start revving the motor on a car until a minute after you first start it.

I would not add a thing to Mobil oil you suppose to have in the engine.
